The Wisconsin Hotel & Lodging Association has been recognized by the International Society of Hotel Association Executives (ISHAE) in its 2010 Awards of Excellence program in the categories of Communications and Public Relations. The awards were presented at the ISHAE Winter Conference in Charleston, South Carolina.

The Wisconsin Hotel & Lodging Association (WH&LA) Award of Excellence for Communications was for their “ Smoking Ban Guide for Wisconsin Lodging Properties”, providing important and timely guidance to lodging properties in implementing the new statewide smoking ban that went into effect July 5.  The Public Relations Award bestowed upon WH&LA was for their online 2011 Wisconsin Lodging Directory Cover Contest, attracting thousands of visitors to their www.WisconsinLodging.org website to vote to select the new cover and qualify for a getaway weekend prize, while also experiencing the valuable searchable lodging functions at the site.

Other state associations recognized for their efforts in 2010 include the Arizona Hotel & Lodging Association, Colorado Hotel & Lodging Association, Rhode Island Hospitality Association, California Hotel & Lodging Association, Oklahoma Hotel & Lodging Association, Ohio Hotel & Lodging Association and Michigan Hotel & Lodging Association.

“ISHAE is pleased to recognize these ten award winners,” stated Christina Pappas, executive director of ISHAE. “The dual award winning associations in Ohio and Wisconsin deserve special acknowledgement for their level of excellent programming in this past year.”

ISHAE presents the annual Awards of Excellence for the best lodging association programs and services, and are widely recognized as the “best of the best” within the hotel and lodging association industry representing innovation and creativity that has brought tangible results to the association and its members.  Award winners presented their winning entries to all conference attendees at the ISHAE Winter Conference.

A new Room Tax resource with a national perspective has just been released, called “Lodging Tax Primer.” The purpose of this new resource is to provide a nation-wide explanation of Room Tax/Lodging Tax, how it varies around the country, what some of the primary challenges have become and some solutions that can be pursued to restore the integrity of the tax.

The target audience ranges from the lodging industry to all of the tourism industry to state and local government officials and to the media, who frequently do not know any background helpful in presenting a fair overview in their writings. There previously was no overview of this tax and it’s implications.

The entire WH&LA Advisory e-mail can be found here (password protected for lodging members only) by clicking the November 9 link, and the Lodging Tax Primer is available to the public from the Room Tax Tools page at the members site on wisconsinlodging.org.

The Wisconsin Hotel & Lodging Association (WH&LA) Room Tax Task Force has developed a new tool to help determine if local Room Tax is compliant with state statutes. The WH&LA Wisconsin Room Tax Self-Audit Tool will help you make sure your local tourism industry is receiving appropriate funding for tourism promotion and development from the tax.

This five-page tool is designed to guide lodging and other tourism businesses, CVBs, chambers of commerce and municipalities through an analysis of the room tax authorized in individual municipalities.

The Room Tax Self-Audit Tool can be found here, by clicking the 8/31/10 link. (This page is password protected for WH&LA Lodging Members only. If you need assistance with logging in, e-mail Michelle or call 262/782-2851.)

Many members have been asking us how they get their property highlighted on our “Traveling in Wisconsin” Facebook page, as it is obviously bringing in reservations, as this example shows:

The answer is simple – there are two ways to get your property featured in a post!

First, you can be a Featured Property at our web site for a month – that comes with a free Facebook post. The cost is $115 for a top row spot, and $90 for a 2nd row spot. Download the Featured Properties reservation form here.

Second, you can order an ad in the 2011 Wisconsin Lodging Directory! Any property that orders a ¼ page or larger ad receives a free Facebook, Tweet and mention in our StayInWisconsin blog. The Lodging Directory Advertising Rate Card is available for download here (about 3 MB) and you can order your ad online here!

If you have any questions, contact Bill Elliott or call 262/782-2851.

The following announcement was sent to all WH&LA (formerly WIA) members on May 24, 2010:

Dear Member,

We are pleased to share with you that, at our May 11 Member Luncheon in Madison, members formally approved our name change from the Wisconsin Innkeepers Association to the Wisconsin Hotel & Lodging Association!  Last Friday the Board of Directors approved our new logo, to move us forward with the name change.

It is important that the first ones to see both our new name and logo are the very individuals we exist for – our valued members.

This week we will begin introducing our new name and logo to those we currently work with and those we look forward to working with.  While we have many cherished memories with our former name, the clarity of our new name should let everyone know at a quick glance that we represent all facets of Wisconsin’s lodging industry – including resorts, inns, bed & breakfasts, hotels, motels, condo rental properties, and vacation homes.

Your comments and input as we have evaluated and discussed the many options of changing our name have been most appreciated, and we are most grateful for your loyalty and support.  We can only be as strong and viable as the members who stand together with us.

We look forward to continuing and strengthening our efforts to deliver value to and advocate for the business interests of our members – which remains our primary purpose.

Sincerely,

Kirk Drusch, CHA                                       Trisha Pugal, CAE
2010 Chairman of the Board                     President, CEO
