The Wisconsin Hotel & Lodging Association (WH&LA) honored the stars of the industry on Monday, November 6th at the Wisconsin Lodging Conference and Trade Show at the Potawatomi Hotel and Casino

Local hospitality supplier Jennifer Church of Milmark Hotel/Motel Investments was honored with the “Associate of the Year Award” for 2017. The award recognizes one professional each year who services the Wisconsin lodging industry in an exemplary manner. Church was presented with the award by 2016 “Associate of the Year” Jim Laurino from Charter Spectrum.

Hotelier Becky Rogers of IDM Hospitality was honored with the “Corporate Champion of the Year” award for 2017. This award recognizes one individual in key management of a company owning/operating multiple lodging properties in Wisconsin. Rogers was presented with the award by the 2016 “Corporate Champion of the Year” Amy Simchak, North Central Group.

Madison hotelier Skip Harless, General Manager of the Hilton Madison Monona Terrace, was awarded the annual “Innkeeper of the Year” award for 2017. The award recognizes outstanding leadership in the Wisconsin lodging industry each year. For the past 3 years, Harless has been responsible for overseeing all aspects of the operation of the 240-room full-service Hilton hotel. Harless was presented with the award by 2016 “Innkeeper of the Year” Charlie Eggen, Madison/Verona.

Additionally, ten non-managerial employees were honored with the “Spirit of Hospitality” award which recognizes employees that exceed guest’s expectations, are wonderful examples to the rest of their team, and help to make the hospitality experience in Wisconsin legendary. Three award winners were not in attendance and will be honored at their property. 2017 Spirit of Hospitality Award Winners:

  • Jesse Frost, Steward at the Holiday Inn Hotel & Convention Center Stevens Point
  • Madelyn Lutz, Guest Services Manager at the Holiday Inn Express & Suites in Verona
  • Jacob McDonald, Maintenance Engineer at the Holiday Inn Hotel & Convention Center Stevens Point
  • Ryan McRae, Assistant General Manager – Operation at the Ambassador Hotel & Ambassador Inn Milwaukee
  • Rick Rehfeldt, Concierge at the Hilton Madison Monona Terrace
  • Scott Stoltz, Resort Night Manager at the Lake Lawn Resort in Delavan

The Wisconsin Hotel & Lodging Association named the recipients of its top three industry awards at the Wisconsin Lodging Conference recently in Lake Geneva, with more than 240 lodging industry attendees present.

Daniel Schetter, CHA, BEST WESTERN PREMIER Waterfront Hotel & Conference Center, Oshkosh, was named 2013 Innkeeper of the Year. The award recognizes one individual each year for outstanding leadership in the Wisconsin lodging industry. He serves as general manager of the BEST WESTERN PREMIER Waterfront Hotel & Conference Center, where his responsibilities include the sales, marketing and operations of the hotel, restaurant and adjoining 18,000 sq. ft. Oshkosh Convention Center. Dan has been on the WH&LA Board of Directors for four years, actively participating in committees, leading him to chair the Legislative & Tourism Committee, Membership Services Committee and many task forces. Currently serving as WH&LA’s Secretary/Treasurer, Dan is also actively engaged in the local tourism industry both at this newly renovated and re-opened property this year in Oshkosh, but also in recent years when he was the General Manager of the Copperleaf Boutique Hotel in Appleton.

Todd Winkler, Wisco Hotel Group, Madison was named 2013 Corporate Champion of the Year. This new award recognizes an individual in key management of a company owning/operating multiple lodging properties in Wisconsin. He serves as President & COO of Wisco Hotel Group, where he oversees the operations of 11 hotels and 2 full-service restaurants, and also works on the development of new properties and products. Todd has been a member of WH&LA since 1989, and has ensured that all Wisco properties are in membership as the company has expanded. He served two terms on the WH&LA Board of Directors, is the incoming Chair of the Legislative/Tourism Committee, and has been very engaged nationally in leadership positions, including serving as Chairman of Choice Hotels Owner’s Council for two years.

Lisa Hogberg, American Express Company, Wauwatosa, was named 2013 Associate of the Year. The award recognizes one professional each year who services the Wisconsin lodging industry in an exemplary manner. She serves as Senior Manager of Client Management, and has served on the WH&LA Board of Directors, for the past four years, serving on many committees.

For more than 35 years, WH&LA has honored the best of those in Wisconsin who have distinguished themselves in the lodging industry. In keeping with tradition, WH&LA is now accepting nominations for the 2011 Innkeeper and Associate of the Year awards and the new Spirit of Hospitality Award!

Download the nomination form here. To receive a copy of the nomination form in the mail, call the WH&LA office at 262/782-2851 or email Jennifer. Forms must be completed and returned to the WH&LA office via mail, fax or email no later than August 5, 2011.

All nominees must be employed by a current WH&LA member. An official nomination form must be submitted for each nominee. Once WH&LA receives a nomination, staff will notify the nominee by forwarding a 2011 official entry form, which notes the award’s criteria and the materials needed for review by the judging committee. Judging will be performed by the WH&LA Awards Committee and the entry form will list all judging criteria in detail.

New for 2011 – the Spirit of Hospitality Award! This award has been created to honor employees who reflect exemplary role models of the true spirit of hospitality in Wisconsin. Recognition will be given to each eligible employee nominated for the Spirit of Hospitality award. Limit one entry per property and owners, operators and general managers are not eligible.

All submitted materials become property of WH&LA and will not be returned. In fairness to all candidates, no extensions will be permitted in the case of missed deadlines. Recent recipients ineligible for the 2011 award include innkeepers of the year Robert Dove, Brian Brandstetter and Kari Zambon; and associates of the year Joe Holland and Doug Nysse.

The Wisconsin Hotel & Lodging Association has chosen Robert Y. Dove, Jr., General Manager & Partner, Best Western Bridgewood Resort Hotel & Conference Center in Neenah, WI, as its 2010 Innkeeper of the Year.

A winner of numerous “Best of the Best” Awards from Best Western International for hotels rated tops in Guest Satisfaction and Quality Assurance for the franchise, Mr. Dove has served as the property’s General Manager/Partner for more than six years, and has served in WH&LA Committee leadership roles as well as officer roles with the WH&LA since 2006. Mr. Dove will assume the position of Chairman of the WH&LA Board of Directors on January 1, 2011.

In addition to receiving this special honor, Governor Jim Doyle sent a Certificate of Commendation, also signed by the Governor, in recognition of
the contributions of Mr. Dove.

The Innkeeper of the Year award is bestowed annually on just one exemplary professional who is the owner or manager of a lodging property in Wisconsin.
