Survey results from The U.S. Conference of Mayors (USCM) and the American Hotel & Lodging Association (AHLA) showed the valuable partnerships hotels and the travel sector have in cities across the country. According to the survey, the hotel industry is critical to local economics, career opportunities, community development, tax revenue, and growth.

Data was collected by more than 100 mayors, representing cities of 30,000 or more. The AH&LA Education Foundation funded the survey. Check out the key survey findings below, or click here to read the Executive Summary.

  • Tourism and the hospitality industry was cited as the second largest sector of the economy 20%; the healthcare industry was cited as the largest sector at 28%.
  • Nine out of ten mayors said their community would benefit from more hotels.
  • 70% of mayors believe hotels and lodging provide the best opportunity, benefits, and wages within the tourism industry.
  • 68 % of mayors report hotels and lodging are the largest contributors to their city’s destination marketing fund.

The TRAC program for Restaurant Servers combines knowledge and skills sections into single tasks so that all of the information needed to perform a particular task can be found in one place. It also serves as an outline for trainers and supervisors, providing specific guidance on how to train each task. Each TRAC Trainer’s Guide contains a job description along with extensive instructions on how to customize the generic job description for the specific property while meeting the guidelines of the Americans with Disabilities Act. The AH&LA Educational Institute has created a new video training program, “Enabling Independence: Service for Guests with Disabilities, to show employees how to confidently and respectfully deliver great service to guests with disabilities.

The 33-minute DVD training program provides information on new Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) Title III non-discrimination requirements that went into effect march 2011. The video, presented in English & Spanish, shares practical guidelines for recognizing a disability, effectively communicating with people with disabilities, offering appropriate accommodations that meet their needs, and respectfully assisting them during their stay as well as during emergency situations. It covers expanded ADA requirements regarding power-driven mobility devices, service animals and practical steps employees can take to ensure the safety and satisfaction of guests with disabilities.

Bonus features include a leader’s guide (in English) with discussion questions, practice activities, an accomplishment checklist, an and optional 10-question quiz. A companion learner’s guide is available in side-by-side English & Spanish.
