The Wisconsin hotel & Lodging Association invites you to participate in WH&LA Lobby Day 2011 on May 11, 2011. Learn about issues facing the lodging industry, hear from key state legislative leaders and meet with your legislators during the event. Activities will begin at 10:30 a.m. at the Hilton Monona Terrace and will include lunch, concluding by 3:30 p.m. after meetings with legislators at the Capitol.

Fees: lodging, lodging executive, student, CVB and chamber members: $29
Associate members: $39
Non-member lodging: $49

The WH&LA Board of Directors would like to invite lodging property owners and managers in the area to attend a special WH&LA Briefing Luncheon on Wednesday, September 15th from 11:45 p.m. – 1:15 p.m. at the Holiday Acres Resort in Rhinelander.  This is a great opportunity for you to meet our leaders, learn about what they are working on, and to participate with your opinions at committee meetings – in a location not too far from you!

In addition to joining our 2010 Chairman of the Board Kirk Drusch and other Board members for lunch, the following information will be shared:

  • Ira Hartman, president of the Northwoods Chapter of the WH&LA will give a brief overview of the current issues facing area properties, to increase Board awareness
  • The WH&LA will provide a brief overview of a few key legislative and other issues of concern to Wisconsin’s lodging industry, such as updates on the Statewide Smoking Ban and Room Tax action underway by the WH&LA
  • Lola Roeh, Chair of the Sustainable Tourism Funding Task Force, will provide an update on State Tourism funding cuts and what the future may hold.

In addition to the Briefing Luncheon, we will also have Committee meetings that WH&LA members are invited to sit in on. The following is a brief schedule for the day:
Wednesday, September 15th

  • 8:15  – 9:00 am              Education/Conference Committee
  • 9:15 – 10:15 am             Membership/Services Committee
  • 10:30 – 11:30 am           Communication Committee
  • 11:45 a.m. – 1:15 p.m.   WH&LA Briefing Luncheon  (Advance registration required)
  • 1:30 p.m. – 3:30 p.m.     Legislative/Tourism Committee
  • 3:45 p.m. – 5:15 p.m.     WH&LA Room Tax Task Force
  • 6:00 p.m.                        Reception followed by Dinner at the Three Coins Restaurant at Holiday Acres Resort (Advance registration required)

You are welcome to join us for any portion listed that you are interested in… however we do kindly ask that you RSVP so that we can be sure to have enough hand-outs and seats for you and other attendees, and so that we can have your meal selection prepared. A fee is required for meal registrations to cover the costs of your meal plus all tax and gratuity, however there are no fees for members to attend Committee meetings. The deadline to RSVP is Monday, September 6 by 3:00 pm. The Wisconsin Innkeepers Association Board of Directors would like to invite lodging property owners and managers in the Green Bay/ DePere area to attend a special Briefing Luncheon on Wednesday, September 27th from 12:30 – 1:45 pm at the F.K. Bemis Conference Center located on the St. Norbert College Campus in De Pere.

A representative of the Greater Green Bay Area Lodging Association will give a brief overview of the current issues facing local operators, and the WIA will provide a brief overview of a few key legislative and other issues of concern to Wisconsin’s lodging industry. Included among these issues are updates on the Statewide Smoking Ban, the upcoming Carbon Monoxide Detector requirements and State Tourism funding cuts. This is also our opportunity for WIA Board members from around the state to hear about local or state issues you find critical to your property.

In addition to the the Briefing Luncheon, we will have a number of committee meetings which WIA members are invited to sit in on. No preparation time is required for the committee meetings; we only ask that you bring your opinions, objectivity, and decision-making skills to the table.  The meeting schedule is as follows:
Wednesday, 1/27 –

  • 9:45 a.m.-12:15 p.m.   Legislative/ Tourism Committee
  • 12:30 pm   Luncheon & Presentation
  • 2:00 p.m. – 3:45 p.m.    Communications/ Marketing Committee immediately followed by Membership/ Services Committee
  • 4:00 p.m. – 5:15 p.m.     Education/ Conference Committee
  • 6:15 p.m.   Reception & Dinner at Titletown Brewing Co.

All WIA members are welcome to attend any of the committee meetings and events.  The registration form for the Luncheon Briefing (and other meetings/events) is available here or you may register online. The only fee is for the cost of your meals, with options provided both online and on the form.

Win a Night & Make Some Deals!

It’s time for the WIA’s Lodging Conference again, and just like always, you should be prepared to find some great values at our TRADE SHOW! There are a host of new vendors exhibiting – from an exterminator with a bed-bug-sniffing dog, to companies who’ll help you with wall coverings to insurance agents, you are sure to find something that you didn’t even know about last year.

This NEW Sunday Night Challenge is a fundraiser for the WIAPAC fund and donations can be made onsite by purchasing “do-over” tickets. “Do-over” tickets are $5 each (or 5 for $20) and each ticket allows you to “do-over” an event for a chance to earn a higher team score. Prizes will be awarded based on total team scores. There is no limit on the amount of tickets you can purchase.

In addition to the outstanding speakers we blogged about last week, we’re also excited to present an equally talented group of panelists for the 2009 Wisconsin Lodging Conference & Trade Show:

Straight Talk on the Economy, Monday 10:30 a.m. features panelists Bill Otto, President of Marcus Hotels & Resorts and Todd Winkler, President of WISCO Hotels along with Lindsay Culbreath from Smith Travel Research (STR). Moderated by Scott Anderson, President of Kohler Company’s Hospitality Division, together these hospitality experts will share their insights into the state of Wisconsin’s Economy, its impact on the lodging industry, as well as where owners & operators should focus over the next year.  This fast-paced, informative session will also include projections for the rest of 2009 and into 2010.

Monday afternoon’s breakout sessions get started with Affordable Renovations at 1:45 p.m. where design & construction experts Doug Nysse from Kahler Slater Inc., Bill Ryan with Architectural Design Consultants Inc. and Darren Noak from Tri-North Builders will answer all your renovation questions.  From determining the best time to remodel to how to establish a budget for renovations; advice for picking your design team or identifying lower cost/ big impact renovation strategies; these experts will share their experiences including their list of DO’s and DON’T's.

With sessions on Monday afternoon, 1:45 p.m. and again Tuesday morning at 9:30 a.m. attendees have two opportunities to hear this panel of experts on Reducing Operational Costs. Matt Matenaer, P.E., Energy Advisor with Focus on Energy kicks off the program with guidance on implementing the most cost-effective energy savings strategies for your property. Next, learn purchasing strategies to reduce or control costs from Neil Locke with Neil Locke & Associates. Finally, Mike Kaminski with Chula Vista Resort and the AmericInn Motel in Wisconsin Dells will share his practical insight with proven strategies for both a large multi-service resort as well as a smaller, limited service property.

Kicking off our Opening Session on Monday morning is Mr. John Bergstrom. As Chairman and CEO of Bergstrom Corporation of Neenah, Wisconsin, he owns and operates 21 automobile dealerships representing 30 different brands.

Mr.BergstromIn 1974 Mr. Bergstrom and his brother, Richard, started Bergstrom Corporation with a small restaurant in their hometown of Neenah. Today, their business is ranked as one of the Top 50 largest dealer groups in the United States.

Mr. Bergstrom is a three-year honor graduate from the Marquette University School of Business.  In addition to being named TIME magazine’s “Number One Quality Automotive Dealer” in the country in 2004, Bergstrom was also presented the “Entrepreneur of the Year” award by Arthur Young & Company, the “Herman W. Lay” national award for Outstanding Performance in the American Free Enterprise System in Washington, D.C., and recognized by Venture Magazine as “Wisconsin Businessman of the Year”.

Mr. Bergstrom knows first-hand the impact today’s economy has had on consumer spending and joins us Monday at 8:45 am to share his perspective on how a recession creates opportunities in Driving Success in a Tough Economy.”

CarolVerretAuthor and trainer Ms. Carol Verret, President of Carol Verret and Associates Consulting and Training (CVCT), joins us Monday afternoon and again on Tuesday morning. Since 1999, Ms. Verret and her team have provided sales, marketing, customer service and coaching services to the hospitality industry through seminars, consultations and web casts. Her programs deliver effective tools to sales associates, General Managers and Revenue Managers from corporate sales organizations to independent properties who need an edge in the competitive marketplace of hotel sales and marketing today.

Ms. Verret also writes for various industry publications from Hotel Online to Hospitality Upgrade, keeping industry professionals up to speed on relevant issues. Offered both Monday afternoon at 1:45 p.m. and again Tuesday morning at 9:30 a.m., Ms. Verret will teach attendees how to harness the latest distribution strategies to maximize revenue for their properties in “Accelerating Revenue.”

Dr.JohnHoganA career hotelier and educator, John J. Hogan is a successful senior executive with a record of accomplishment in leading hospitality industry organizations at multiple levels, with demonstrated competencies as a strong leader, relationship builder, problem solver and mentor.

Mr. Hogan starts us off Tuesday with “101 Formulas to THRIVE in ANY Economy” at 8:00 a.m.  Join us for breakfast as he takes attendees through a fresh look at virtually all areas of lodging operations from marketing and staff development to building guest loyalty and more.

Mr. Hogan then returns at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday with “Effective Selling with or without a Sales Staff” where he shares how to identify and build repeat guests, identify why guests DON’T come back and what to do about it.  Attendees will also learn 20 money-making marketing ideas & more.

Wrapping up the Conference Tuesday, we are pleased to once again have Ms. Marlene Colucci, Executive Vice President of Public Policy for AH&LA. Ms. Colucci is responsible for setting the policy agenda and implementing the lobbying efforts of the association, providing guidance on all legislative and regulatory matters impacting AH&LA members, and directing the association’s political activity. In addition, she works directly with Members of Congress and the administration to promote travel and tourism as an industry.

Ms. Colucci brings strong credentials and years of political expertise to AH&LA. Before joining AH&LA, she worked in the White House, serving as a special assistant to President George W. Bush in the Office of Domestic Policy. In that capacity, she coordinated all labor, transportation and postal reform policy initiatives for the White House. She frequently speaks to hoteliers across the country regarding the importance of grass roots advocacy. Stick around to hear Ms. Colucci share her insider’s view of policy and politics, Tuesday at 11:00 a.m. for the closing session: “Capitol Hill & The White House: A View from the Inside.”
