Congratulations to the following WH&LA member properties for their recent awards & recognitions!

Settle Inn & Suites, Appleton, was recently named 2010 Inn of the Year by Boomerang Hotels. The award is presented to the one property which has excelled in all operational areas to present a high quality product that results in maximum guest satisfaction. The property also received awards for Excellence in Quality Assurance and Outstanding Breakfast Presentation.

Americas Best Value Inn-Campus View, Eau Claire, received a Best of the Best award for Overall Excellence (over 60 rooms) from Vantage Hospitality, which honors the top Americas Best Value Inn hotels in 11 different categories.

Congratulations to the following WH&LA members on their recent awards & recognition:

The American Club Resort, Kohler, was awarded the 2012 Forbes Five-Star Award, one of 57 hotels worldwide to earn this distinction. The award recognizes superior service and guest satisfaction, and has been awarded to The American Club Resort for three straight years.

Crowne Plaza Milwaukee West, Wauwatosa, has received the Torchbearer Award from InterContinental Hotels Group, its highest honor for quality and customer service, awarded to only the top eight Crowne Plaza hotels in North America. The property has also been named one of the brand’s top performers for excellence in operational and customer satisfaction for the second consecutive year.

Holiday Inn Madison at the American Center has also received the InterContinental Hotels Group Torchbearer Award, one of 116 properties out of more than 4,400 properties to receive the award.

WH&LA honored Bob Dhir, DHIR Group LLC, Milwaukee as its 2011 Innkeeper of the Year and Keran Farrell, Steinhafels Commercial Interiors, New Berlin as its 2011 Associate of the Year at the Wisconsin Lodging Conference on November 7 at the Radisson Paper Valley Hotel, Appleton.

Bob Dhir is the Owner/President & CEO of the DHIR Group LLC, whose portfolio currently consists of the recent award-winning Quality Inn Milwaukee/Brookfield; Best Western PLUS Milwaukee Airport; and Super 8 Milwaukee Airport. Dhir and his wife, Anita, are a well-known team in the Dhir Group, continually striving to make their properties the best from the inside to the outside in operations, appearance and service.

Dhir has served for the past six years on the WH&LA Board of Directors, and was instrumental in gaining approval for the change of the organization’s name from the Wisconsin Innkeepers Association to it’s current name.  He has also served as president of the Wisconsin Coalition of Asian-Indian Organizations, and serves on the advisory boards of franchisors Wyndham Hotels Group/Super 8, and Choice Hotels International.

Keran Farrell is the Director of Contract Sales for Steinhafels Commercial Interiors, with responsibilities including directing the sales efforts for furniture, fixtures and equipment, including mattress sales to Wisconsin lodging properties, hospitals, universities, and commercial applications in general.

Farrell served on the WH&LA Board of Directors from 2005 – 2010, was recently elected to a new term starting in 2012, and he regularly participates in WH&LA committee and task force meetings.

For their service to the lodging industry, both honorees also received a special commendation from Governor Scott Walker.

Congratulations to Bob & Anita Dhir of the DHIR Group, Milwaukee; Cathy Ekendahl, GM of the Quality Inn Milwaukee/Brookfield; and the entire staff of the Quality Inn Milwaukee/Brookfield for receiving four 2011 Choice Hotels International APEX Awards. The awards included Exceptional Service – General Manager; Exceptional Quality Assurance Award; Service Excellence – Maintenance; and Best Renovation/Re-Design.

Congratulations to WH&LA Chairman Bob Dove and the entire staff of the BEST WESTERN PREMIER Bridgewood Resort Hotel & Conference Center, Neenah, for recently achieving the BEST WESTERN PREMIER designation. Only 15 Best Western Hotels out of 2,200 hotels in North America have received this prestigious honor. The BEST WESTERN PREMIER properties offer guests an upscale hotel choice with upgraded amenities.

Tim Dixon, owner of The Iron Horse Hotel, Milwaukee, was named 2011 Hotelier of the Year by the Boutique & Lifestyle Lodging Association.

For more than 35 years, WH&LA has honored the best of those in Wisconsin who have distinguished themselves in the lodging industry. In keeping with tradition, WH&LA is now accepting nominations for the 2011 Innkeeper and Associate of the Year awards and the new Spirit of Hospitality Award!

Download the nomination form here. To receive a copy of the nomination form in the mail, call the WH&LA office at 262/782-2851 or email Jennifer. Forms must be completed and returned to the WH&LA office via mail, fax or email no later than August 5, 2011.

All nominees must be employed by a current WH&LA member. An official nomination form must be submitted for each nominee. Once WH&LA receives a nomination, staff will notify the nominee by forwarding a 2011 official entry form, which notes the award’s criteria and the materials needed for review by the judging committee. Judging will be performed by the WH&LA Awards Committee and the entry form will list all judging criteria in detail.

New for 2011 – the Spirit of Hospitality Award! This award has been created to honor employees who reflect exemplary role models of the true spirit of hospitality in Wisconsin. Recognition will be given to each eligible employee nominated for the Spirit of Hospitality award. Limit one entry per property and owners, operators and general managers are not eligible.

All submitted materials become property of WH&LA and will not be returned. In fairness to all candidates, no extensions will be permitted in the case of missed deadlines. Recent recipients ineligible for the 2011 award include innkeepers of the year Robert Dove, Brian Brandstetter and Kari Zambon; and associates of the year Joe Holland and Doug Nysse.

Congratulations to the following WH&LA members on their recent awards and recognition!

The Iron Horse Hotel, Milwaukee was honored by the American Hotel & Lodging Association at its Stars of the Industry Awards ceremony, held during the Summer Summit at the Hyatt Regency in Atlanta, GA. The hotel was a winner of the Guest Relations, Small Property award and the Special Events, One-time Only, Small Property award for its celebration of the 77th anniversary of the repeal of prohibition, where the property was transformed into a 1933 speakeasy.

Bob & Anita Dhir of DHIR Group LLC, Milwaukee were recognized at the Choice Hotels International 2011 Convention as 2011 Premier Alliance Winners, which recognizes exceptional franchisees that develop properties with Choice Hotels, live up to the brand promise through excellent property performance and are active in the franchise community.

Ann Maletzke of Spur of the Moment Ranch in Mountain, Wis. was published in the June issue of AH&LA’s Lodging magazine with an article titled, “Small and Independent Hotels: Finding Alternatives.”

From Lodging magazine:
Often, independent properties are family-owned businesses. Whether through a bank or SBA mortgages, their entire worth is rolled into the venture. Many of these owners have worked a lifetime for their businesses, which have provided comfort and pride in the good times, and required cutting back in the lean years. But the game has changed in this last economic downturn.

Early on, many of these independent owners were mortgaged in small, community banks where decisions were made locally. Owners did business on a handshake, and entire communities pulled together to help fellow neighbors and businesses to survive. In this last recession, many of the small, community-owned banks were sold to larger national, or regional banks. Attitudes changed, and new owners were unfamiliar with small businesses that resided in the banks’ communities.

The American Hotel & Lodging Association (AH&LA) has named WH&LA Chairman of the Board, Robert Y. Dove, Jr. of the Best Western Bridgewood Resort Hotel, Neenah a winner of the State Leadership Award for Wisconsin at the association’s annual Legislative Action Summit in March.

The State Leadership Awards, formerly known as the Most Valuable Volunteer Awards, were created in 1998 to honor standout members in each partner state association who help implement and strengthen programs. Below Dove is pictured with AH&LA Chairman John Campbell and AH&LA President, CEO Joe McInerney at the Legislative Action Summit in Washington, D.C.
