The Wisconsin Hotel & Lodging Association (WH&LA) honored the stars of the industry on Monday, November 6th at the Wisconsin Lodging Conference and Trade Show at the Potawatomi Hotel and Casino

Local hospitality supplier Jennifer Church of Milmark Hotel/Motel Investments was honored with the “Associate of the Year Award” for 2017. The award recognizes one professional each year who services the Wisconsin lodging industry in an exemplary manner. Church was presented with the award by 2016 “Associate of the Year” Jim Laurino from Charter Spectrum.

Hotelier Becky Rogers of IDM Hospitality was honored with the “Corporate Champion of the Year” award for 2017. This award recognizes one individual in key management of a company owning/operating multiple lodging properties in Wisconsin. Rogers was presented with the award by the 2016 “Corporate Champion of the Year” Amy Simchak, North Central Group.

Madison hotelier Skip Harless, General Manager of the Hilton Madison Monona Terrace, was awarded the annual “Innkeeper of the Year” award for 2017. The award recognizes outstanding leadership in the Wisconsin lodging industry each year. For the past 3 years, Harless has been responsible for overseeing all aspects of the operation of the 240-room full-service Hilton hotel. Harless was presented with the award by 2016 “Innkeeper of the Year” Charlie Eggen, Madison/Verona.

Additionally, ten non-managerial employees were honored with the “Spirit of Hospitality” award which recognizes employees that exceed guest’s expectations, are wonderful examples to the rest of their team, and help to make the hospitality experience in Wisconsin legendary. Three award winners were not in attendance and will be honored at their property. 2017 Spirit of Hospitality Award Winners:

  • Maria Cerna Ortiz, Housekeeper at the Hampton Inn Appleton
  • Abigail Elder, Bartender at the Amber Grill at the Holiday Inn Hotel & Convention Center in Stevens Point
  • Charles Feit, Guest Services Representative at the Fairfield Inn & Suites Madison West/Middleton
  • Jesse Frost, Steward at the Holiday Inn Hotel & Convention Center Stevens Point
  • Madelyn Lutz, Guest Services Manager at the Holiday Inn Express & Suites in Verona
  • Jacob McDonald, Maintenance Engineer at the Holiday Inn Hotel & Convention Center Stevens Point
  • Ryan McRae, Assistant General Manager – Operation at the Ambassador Hotel & Ambassador Inn Milwaukee
  • Rick Rehfeldt, Concierge at the Hilton Madison Monona Terrace
  • Scott Stoltz, Resort Night Manager at the Lake Lawn Resort in Delavan
  • Lisa Wendtland, Guest Services Representative at the Hampton Inn & Suites Madison West
  • Nora Xouca, Room Inspector at the Residence Inn Madison West/Middleton

Congratulations to the following WH&LA member property on its recent award & recognition!

Kress Inn, De Pere, was named 2014 Hotel of the Year by the Ascend Collection. The award is based on guest surveys from Choice Hotels, completed by guests after their stays. General manager of Kress Inn, Pat Olejniczak, spoke to postcrescent.com about the award.

Hilton Milwaukee City Center earned four distinctions in Hilton Hotels & Resorts’ 2013 Brand Awards of Excellence in the Americas, including Food & Beverage Award of Excellence, Food & Beverage Most Improved Award, Housekeeping Most Improved Award, and “Make It Right” Most Improved Award.

Congratulations to the following WH&LA members on their recent awards & recognition!

Courtyard by Marriott-Madison East was named 2013 Hotel of the Year by Marriott International. This is the third year in a row a North Central Group property has won the award.

Kress Inn, De Pere, won the 2014 Platinum Hospitality Award from Choice Hotels International Inc. The award recognizes Kress Inn as being in the top percentage of properties within the Ascend Hotel Collection brand.

Congratulations to the following WH&LA members on their recent awards & recognition:

Holiday Inn Express & Suites Green Bay East was recently awarded the 2013 IHG Quality of Excellence Award for overall guest satisfaction, given to less than two percent of Holiday Inn Express properties. The property was also chosen as an Expedia Insiders’ Select 2013 Hotel for superior services, exceptional guest experience and notable value. The property was also distinguished among IHG hotels as a “Voice of the Guest All-Star hotel” and was awarded a 2013 TripAdvisor Certificate of Excellence award.

Condé Nast Traveler readers picked two WH&LA member properties for its Top 5 Resorts in the Midwest: The American Club Resort, Kohler, ranked #1, while The Osthoff Resort, Elkhart Lake, was chosen for the #4 spot.

The Wisconsin Hotel & Lodging Association named the recipients of its top three industry awards at the Wisconsin Lodging Conference recently in Lake Geneva, with more than 240 lodging industry attendees present.

Daniel Schetter, CHA, BEST WESTERN PREMIER Waterfront Hotel & Conference Center, Oshkosh, was named 2013 Innkeeper of the Year. The award recognizes one individual each year for outstanding leadership in the Wisconsin lodging industry. He serves as general manager of the BEST WESTERN PREMIER Waterfront Hotel & Conference Center, where his responsibilities include the sales, marketing and operations of the hotel, restaurant and adjoining 18,000 sq. ft. Oshkosh Convention Center. Dan has been on the WH&LA Board of Directors for four years, actively participating in committees, leading him to chair the Legislative & Tourism Committee, Membership Services Committee and many task forces. Currently serving as WH&LA’s Secretary/Treasurer, Dan is also actively engaged in the local tourism industry both at this newly renovated and re-opened property this year in Oshkosh, but also in recent years when he was the General Manager of the Copperleaf Boutique Hotel in Appleton.

Todd Winkler, Wisco Hotel Group, Madison was named 2013 Corporate Champion of the Year. This new award recognizes an individual in key management of a company owning/operating multiple lodging properties in Wisconsin. He serves as President & COO of Wisco Hotel Group, where he oversees the operations of 11 hotels and 2 full-service restaurants, and also works on the development of new properties and products. Todd has been a member of WH&LA since 1989, and has ensured that all Wisco properties are in membership as the company has expanded. He served two terms on the WH&LA Board of Directors, is the incoming Chair of the Legislative/Tourism Committee, and has been very engaged nationally in leadership positions, including serving as Chairman of Choice Hotels Owner’s Council for two years.

Lisa Hogberg, American Express Company, Wauwatosa, was named 2013 Associate of the Year. The award recognizes one professional each year who services the Wisconsin lodging industry in an exemplary manner. She serves as Senior Manager of Client Management, and has served on the WH&LA Board of Directors, for the past four years, serving on many committees.

Heidel House Resort & Spa, Green Lake and BEST WESTERN PLUS Milwaukee Airport Hotel & Conference Center have earned a 2013 Certificate of Excellence from TripAdvisor.com, given to businesses that consistently earn high ratings from TripAdvisor travelers.

To help make sure that all travelers interested in coming to the Harley-Davidson 110th Anniversary celebration August 29 – September 3, 2013 are able, travelers now have a new and free resource to find lodging up to two hours away. The Wisconsin Hotel & Lodging Association is hosting a page at www.WisconsinLodging.org/Harley where travelers can browse available lodging by distance from the festivities, in 15-minute driving time increments and book directly online or call for reservations. With reservations and cancellations changing availability each week, all participating properties will verify their availability weekly. Each Thursday through August 29, the page will be updated to reflect the latest status.

“There are still lodging options available for those who want to come to Wisconsin and celebrate the Harley-Davidson tradition in Milwaukee,” said Trisha Pugal, WH&LA President/CEO. “We hope to connect those travelers with rooms that best fit their needs, whether they stay 15 minutes away or even 2 hours away. What better way to experience more of what the Milwaukee area and other nearby areas have to offer than touring by motorcycle?”

The WH&LA is offering this free service in collaboration with The Wisconsin Department of Tourism, Visit Milwaukee and Harley-Davidson to conveniently find and book accommodations for this historic celebration.

Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker has appointed Scott Krause, General Manager of the Heidel House Resort & Spa, Green Lake, to the Governor’s Council on Tourism. Krause currently serves on the WH&LA Board of Directors as the AH&LA Director. Also named to the council was Allyson Gommer, Chippewa Falls Area Chamber of Commerce.

“We’re thrilled to welcome Allyson and Scott aboard the Council,” said Tourism Secretary Stephanie Klett. “Their years of experience and diverse backgrounds in the tourism industry will help guide the Council’s work in seeking innovative ways to market Wisconsin and grow the tourism economy.”

The Governor’s Council on Tourism is made up of 20 individuals appointed by the Governor, hailing from all corners of the state and from a variety of occupations within the state’s tourism industry. Tourism Council members provide strategic insight and advisement to the Department of Tourism to further its mission to grow the tourism economy in the state

The American Hotel & Lodging Association (AH&LA) presented 2013 WH&LA Chairman of the Board Buck Drossart, CLM, of The Pointe Hotel & Suites and Conference Center, Minocqua, with a State Leadership Award during AH&LA’s annual Legislative Action Summit. The State Leadership Awards were created in 1998 to honor standout members in each partner state association who help implement and strengthen programs. Drossart is pictured at left with J.W. Mariott, Jr., executive chairman & chairman of the board for Mariott International Inc., who was honored with the first AH&LA Voice of the Industry Award.

Vail Brown, CMHS, vice president of global business development & marketing for STR, was also recognized at LAS for receiving the 2013 John Whitaker Award, which is presented to an outstanding Certified Master Hotel Supplier for their dedication and to innovation within the industry. Vail Brown is scheduled to speak at the 2013 Wisconsin Lodging Conference November 3-5 at the Grand Geneva Resort & Spa, Lake Geneva.
