From HotelNewsNow.com:

Search engine marketing is often highly tactical; it involves checking things off a list to ensure the highest potential for visibility in the search engine results pages (SERPs). But social media is a completely different space. While developing a presence there can be beneficial, diving right in can be harmful (especially for smaller properties) without first establishing a solid plan. Search (on the organic side) is about doing; social is about planning.

What do you have time to do well?
Before running around yelling things like “We need Tumblr, Pinterest, Twitter, and Scribd accounts and we need them YESTERDAY!” take a step back and consider how much time you actually have in a given week to do the ongoing maintenance of posting content, responding to comments and overseeing your social media platforms.

Remember: The only people who will notice that you don’t have an insert social media profile here account are the people who already are using them. So if you have them but don’t use them effectively, it can be worse in the long run than doing nothing.

What are your guests already doing?
Rather than starting with a specific social medium and trying to figure out what to say on it, it’s often more productive to first figure out where your current demographic is active. Unless your brand is aggressively trying to break into a new market segment, starting where the conversation is already happening is often your best bet. And with 845 million monthly active users (as of December 2011), Facebook is a must even for smaller brands.

Now that we have a starting point, it’s time to jump into some time-saving tactics… continue reading at HotelNewsNow.com.

WH&LA is excited to announce that WisconsinLodging.org will soon feature an enhanced booking solution for the traveling public! Website visitors will be able to view property availability, amenities and rate information to match their Wisconsin lodging needs.

Currently, visitors to WisconsinLodging.org can use the Book Now application to book a room by searching by city, type of property and dates of their stay. Properties had to opt-in to be included on this page and limited information was returned in search results. A fee was charged by the third-party operator of Book Now for every reservation booked via this method.

Under our new arrangement, ALL WH&LA member lodging properties can participate in the program without opting in and there will be NO COST for any reservations made via Book Now. All WH&LA member properties will be searchable in the application, with rates and availability listed where Book Now has a compatible interface. When the guest is ready to book the room, they will be sent directly to the property’s booking page to complete the transaction.

What you need to do:

If your property has an online booking engine, you’re all set! The Book Now application will automatically pull rates and availability from most lodging reservation systems on a daily basis.

If your property does not have an online booking engine, Book Now can provide one for you, as a free service for WH&LA members. Properties can sign up for the service here, and instructions will be emailed outlining the setup and ongoing inventory management for compatibility with the Book Now application at WisconsinLodging.org.

For hotels in the following chains, the Book Now application’s parent company, JackRabbit, already has corporate agreements to access your chain’s reservation system: Accor, America’s Best Value Inns, AmericInn, Best Western, Choice, Carlson, Hilton, Hyatt, InterContinental Hotels Group, La Quinta, Marriott, Red Roof Inn, Starwood and Wyndham. WH&LA’s service will simply provide new customers to your franchise system.

Questions? Contact the JackRabbit customer service center here.
